Look, I'm a lot like you: I can't tell the difference between Baptists and Saviours in my head, the two bands even having the same goddamn logo in my battered brain and somehow I just end up daydreaming about Coliseum any time I start thinking about either of those two bands anyway , and whenever I listen to one of them I mainly think about what my current approximation of what the other one sounds like is.
End result, no idea, even as I was watching, and very much enjoying, Baptists play live recently let's set the record straight: Baptists are a much more intense hardcore band, while Saviours employ more of a current-Coliseum post-hardcore sound mixed with lots of twin-guitar rock riffing and where the hell is Kurt Ballou? I must admit to being impressed by this feat, since I rarely come across a band that succeeds in carving out such a unique sound from two different sources, yet managing to keep them somewhat reminiscient of their heritage.
That being said, however, the monotony aspect throws me off a bit. For me, music such as this should be delivered with energy and enthusiasm; Perhaps even anger. And by toning down the energy, Saviour makes Palace of Vision an album that I have an even harder time relating to, being as stubborn and old-fashioned as I am. Jump to. Sections of this page. Also their first in four years, but five records in a decade — actually nine years, as their debut LP, Crucifire , arrived in — is still a more than solid track record, and while I think the Oakland, CA, heavy thrash rockers remain a somewhat underrated entity on the East Coast, their material has remained consistent in its level of impact over that span, growing more complex without giving up its hard-hitting feel.
